The Scale Jumped 3 Pounds. What Did I Do Wrong?

Aug 03, 2026

If a scale jump has ever derailed your whole day, this week's episode breaks down what's actually happening. Here's what I covered:

A 2-3 pound overnight jump is not physiologically possible from fat gain. That kind of swing is due to other factors - but when you don't understand that (or believe it), it can cause you to overeat in reaction to the scale.

What you need to know:

Sodium causes water retention, even from one higher-sodium meal.

Carbs get stored as glycogen, and glycogen binds water, roughly 3 grams of water for every 1 gram of glycogen. A higher-carb day means more stored water, not more fat. This is also why very low-carb diets show a big scale drop in week one, it's water loss, not fat loss, and why reintroducing carbs can cause a temporary bump.

Hormones affect this differently depending on your situation: still cycling, on hormonal birth control, or in perimenopause/menopause. All three can cause fluid retention independent of a "typical" monthly pattern.

Stress, cortisol, and poor sleep can shift the number on their own, no workout or food change required.

The real issue isn't the number. It's the story you attach to it: "I failed," "I did something wrong," which is what actually triggers restriction or a "screw it" spiral.

The scale only has power over your mood if you already believe something negative about yourself. The fix isn't managing the number, it's questioning the belief.

Full episode has the full breakdown, plus what to do instead of spiraling on a high scale day.
